ISLAMABAD: In a veiled criticism of Monday’s ruling of the Lahore High Court (LHC) banning the airing of his, Maryam Nawaz and other party leaders’ speeches against the judiciary, former premier Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said protest is the right of every person and that people cannot be stopped from expressing their opinion.

Speaking to the media on the premises of the accountability court in Islamabad, Sharif said the constitution, and law calls for giving due respect to vote.

“I talk about the rights of 220 million people. How can you undermine that right of people. This country belongs to everyone. Every citizen has equal rights,” he said.

“It is the right of everyone to protest. You can’t stop anyone from speaking.”

The former premier said the country had already been the victim of anarchy, adding that a solution to this must be found.

He said protest is a fundamental right and in a civilized society people are not deprived of this right.

He regretted that a NAB reference has been filed against him for allegedly illegally construction of a road to his residence in Raiwind and asked if a reference should also be filed against him for construction of motorways in the country.
