ISLAMABAD: Shortly after the Supreme Court’s ruling that the parliamentarians disqualified under Article 62 (1)(f) cannot contest elections for life, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen expressed optimism that the apex court hearing his petition seeking review of its verdict that disqualified him as member of Parliament will decide the case in his favour.

In a tweet the PTI leader said: “I always believed 62 1(f) to be for life but not applicable in my case.Full money trail provided of tax paid Income, property declared in assets of children and not mine on advice of tax consultant. This was the only issue. My review is still pending and IA justice will prevail.”

He said his appeal against the disqualification verdict is pending in the apex court and hoped that the decision would come in his favour.

A five-member bench of the top court ruled today that disqualification of a parliamentarian under the provision is permanent and will remain in force until another verdict comes in his or her favour or the disqualification verdict is stricken down.

On December 15, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, a three-judge bench disqualified PTI leader Tareen under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution for deliberately submitting a false statement in the Supreme Court to conceal his property in the United Kingdom.

On July 28, last year, the apex court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from the prime miniter’s office on the ground that he did not disclose a salary from his son’s Dubai-based company – the money Sharif says he never received.
