McAfee realizes offering a good VPN solution is a bear necessity for its consumer business.

Here at PCMag , we believe that using a VPN is now essential to your privacy and protection online, and thankfully there’s a growing number of reliable providers to choose between. One of those providers, arguably the most recognizable out there, just got acquired. TunnelBear is no longer independent after agreeing to be acquired by the security behemoth that is McAfee.

In a press release, McAfee explained that the risks of connecting to public Wi-Fi are only growing and very few people carry out the relevant checks to ensure they are safe before connecting. The company’s solution to this problem for consumers is to offer the added security of a VPN by default. TunnelBear is going to be that solution.

TunnelBear is a very well-known name and brand within the VPN space, and it’s clear McAfee recognizes that, referring to the company as having “an engaging and profitable direct-to-consumer brand.” It also looks set to continue functioning as an independent service, with Ryan Dochuk, co-founder of TunnelBear stating, “TunnelBear will continue to develop the products our customers have come to love, now with the backing and resources of a leading cybersecurity company.”

With McAfee’s backing, TunnelBear expects to expand its VPN service into new regions. What remains unclear is how McAfee will absorb TunnelBear into its existing consumer products. Will we see TunnelBear offered as part of security suites? Or will McAfee drop the brand, but use the underlying service for consumer products such as Total Protection, Internet Security, and Android/iOS Mobile Security solutions?
