In 1989, Nintendo released the Game Boy, a 7.7 oz monochrome wonder that promised Nintendo-style gameplay on the go. And it delivered in spades, playing host over the next 10 years to timeless classics such as Tetris, Super Mario Land 2, Pokémon, Metroid II, Kirby’s Adventure, Wario Land II, Dr. Mario, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
While Nintendo superceded the original Game Boy with the Game Boy Color in 1998, and then surpassed it even further with the Game Boy Advance in 2001, there’s still a rustic charm to the older monochrome-style games worth celebrating. With that in mind, let’s take a look at a handful of lesser-known, mostly overlooked great Game Boy games. We’re talking original Game Boy only—no color, no frills. Just fun.
