Patient owners will make the jump straight to Android 8.1, passing Go, but not collecting $200.
BARCELONA—Nokia 3 owners will be able to get an update to Android 8.1 Oreo from Beta Labs starting Monday, February 26, according to HMD Global’s chief product officer Juho Sarvikas. There’s some good news for Nokia 2 owners as well, as they’re also also in line for some Oreo goodness, though a launch date for that is still to be confirmed.
“Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 have been running on Oreo already for a couple of months, and Nokia 3 will enter the Nokia Mobile Beta Labs and receive Oreo on Monday and Nokia 2 will follow a couple of weeks later,” Sarvikas said.
The update to Oreo has been a long time coming for the Nokia 3, with rumors suggesting that it would land in late 2017. Now we have confirmation that the move to 8.1 is happening, and not the Android Go Oreo Edition, as had been rumoured.
Sarvikas also shed some light on the update process and added that future updates should be smoother.
“We’ve done our very best in optimizing how fast we get this stuff from the silicon vendor and how fast we can get this to market. So obviously there’s always room to improve and Google has a couple of really good projects [designed to] streamline that delivery chain. But we want to continue to deliver industry-leading time to market for the latest platform features.”
Sarvikas added that by signing up for Beta Labs access, not only does this mean users can get new features more quickly, they’re also helping out at the tail end of the supply chain by reporting any errors and leaving feedback.
While we have no information on when OTA updates will be rolling out, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 owners who can’t wait should register their interest here if they’ve not already done so and sit tight.
