EA’s version of Steam is offering a classic survival horror game completely free.
For digital gaming, Steam continues to be the most popular destination. Other services exist and are worth having an account with, including GOG, itch.io, and EA’s own service called Origin. And it’s Origin where you’ll want to head this week as there’s a free game on offer in the form of Dead Space.
EA has been offering free games regularly for a number of years now under the banner of “On the House.” The latest is also a classic. Dead Space was developed by EA Redwood Shores and first released back in October 2008. Gameplay sees you making (and fighting) your way through a mining starship infested with aliens.
The critics loved it, with average review scores across PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 all in the high 80’s or even the 90’s. Gamers loved it too, with over 2 million copies sold and several additional games made carrying its name. There’s also a number of graphic novels and a couple of animated movies (Downfall and Aftermath) rounding out the IP.
Now you can play the original game for free on PC if you have an Origin account. If you don’t, set one up for free and then download the game. That’s the reason EA does these On the House offers, after all. The publisher hopes you’ll come back and buy some other games after enjoying the free ones.
