Liverpool had opened talks over a move to bring Keita to the club this month having agreed to sign him in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool wanted the midfielder now after selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

And Keita was understood to be keen on the move and talks had opened to bring forward the deal.

However Leipzig have released a statement saying he WILL be staying until the summer

“Naby Keita remains up to the 30.06.2018 player of RB Leipzig,” it read.

“We will finish the speculation to a premature change in winter from #Keita to Liverpool FC.”

Keita now looks set to finish the season in Germany before making the move in the summer.

He scored in yesterday’s victory over Schalke in what was billed as his farewell match with fans claiming the goal was a leaving gift to the club.

Liverpool will now need to look elsewhere if they want reinforcements for the loss of Coutinho this month.

They have been linked with another Bundesliga star in the form of Leon Goretzka.

Jurgen Klopp’s side take on league leaders Manchester City this afternoon and will be without big January signing Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk has a tight hamstring and has been ruled out.
