The tennis veteran went up against the likes of fellow professionals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to scoop the top prize in the Fans’ Favourite vote.
Roger Federer also took victory for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award & Comeback Player of the Year – both of which were voted for by their peers.
The Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award is given to the player who, throughout the year, conducted himself at the highest level of professionalism and integrity, who competed with his fellow players with the utmost spirit of fairness and who promoted the game through his off-court activities.
Federer has won the Sportsmanship award every year since 2004, with the exception of 2010, when the honours went to Nadal.
Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro were the other nominees in that category.
Kevin Anderson, Filip Krajinovic, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, Janko Tipsarevic made the shortlist for the Comeback Player of the Year category, along with Nadal and Federer, but it was the latter who took the honours.
Federer chose to sit out the second half of 2016 in order to recover fully from his knee surgery as well as a back problem, but returned in sensational style to win the Australian Open and Wimbledon for an eighth time.
Nadal also overcame injuries to win the French Open and the US Open this year as well as reclaim his world No.1 spot.
But tennis fans were delighted with the news Federer took home all the big accolades at the ATP World Tour Awards.
One fan on twitter said: “Congrats @rogerfederer amazing season, final push now…”
Another added: “Big congrats to @rogerfederer To those who complain it’s fixed: Roger won those Awards for so many years even when he wasn’t the Superstar he is today.
“He is just someone who the people love – may it be us fans or fellow players.”
